Speech, Language & Communication Unit
We are delighted to have been selected to develop a Speech, Language and Communication resource base at Tidemill. This follows a borough wide review of SEN provision and the resultant recommendation to establish SEN resource bases in mainstream schools.
Our Lead Teacher for Speech, Language and Communication Needs, Michelle Rosemond, is currently working with the Local Authority to develop this provision and we hope to start our first classes in September 09.
Children with Speech, Language and Communication Needs may have difficulties in three areas:-
Understanding and formulating spoken language
Processing and producing speech sounds
Understanding and using all aspects of language appropriately in different social contexts
Starting primary school is a huge transition in a young child’s life and entering this environment with speech, language and communication needs (SLCN) can make this even more difficult. Children may struggle to make friends, to learn and to be themselves in their new community.
The new resource at Tidemill will mean that we have specialists attached to the school which will have a huge benefit to all of our children, as well as to new children joining us as part of this new resource.
